Nina Simone: Four Women
By Christina Ham, directed by Lydia Fort, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, AL.
Choreography: Lindsay Benton. Scenic Design: Sean Fanning. Costume Design: Kate Fry. Lighting Design: Reza Behjat. Sound Design: Sharath Patel.
“Scenic designer Sean Fanning’s set in this Alabama Shakespeare Festival production is strewn with broken benches and chairs, wood chips and fallen and damaged Bibles - the remnants of Birmingham’s bombed-out 16th Street Baptist Church where four young girls were killed by KKK-planted dynamite. There is a prism of a church window on stage. But most telling are the four tiny dresses that join broken stained-glass windows suspended above the stage – a symbol of the tragic 1963 church bombing that literary hovers over the conversations of the women.” -Rick Harmon, Montgomery Advertiser
