Mother of the Maid

By Jane Anderson, directed by Jasson Minadakis, Marin Theatre Company, CA.

Scenic Design: Sean Fanning. Costume Design: Sarah Smith. Lighting Design: Chris Lundahl. Original Score: Chris Houston. Sound Design: Sara Huddleston.

Photos by Sean Fanning and Kevin Berne.

The outlines of Sean Fanning’s set design, rafters and windows floating above the floor and receding to a fixed point in the distance, look almost like a path to heaven. Sara Huddleston’s sound design, with music compositions by Chris Houston and vocals and cello by Penina Biddle-Gottesman, conjures the ghostly voices that spur Joan, making clear that for these characters, the spirit world, the world of faith, is everywhere around them. Chris Lundahl’s lighting design cannily suggests hope in an eternal war — it’s as if characters are always in some pit, looking up for a beam of sun.” -Lily Janiak, San Francisco Chronicle
