Sean Fanning is an award-winning San Diego based freelance scenic designer. As one of the few Deaf/hard of hearing theatre artists in the country, he brings a uniquely heightened visual sensitivity and sculptural approach to theatrical space. From an early age, he has been deeply interested in physical worlds onstage and the intertwining of production design with live storytelling. He is focused on new work and radically inclusive rooms.
Sean has designed in numerous regional theatres and local professional companies across the US, among them: The Old Globe, La Jolla Playhouse, San Diego Repertory Theatre, Cygnet Theatre, Marin Theatre Company, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Florida Studio Theatre, Sierra Repertory Theatre, Lamb’s Players Theatre, Diversionary Theatre, Moxie Theatre, Summer Repertory Theatre, and Rocky Mountain Repertory Theatre.
He has been the recipient of 2 San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Awards for Designer of the Year and Outstanding Scenic Design. He holds an M.F.A. in Scene Design from San Diego State University.
